Types of Mortar
Lime Mortar
- A traditional Mortar which gives way for natural movement and flexibility in your roof structure or chimney.
- Much more environmentally friendly compared to other Mortars available on the market.
- Helps prevent any cracking in older bricks, usually in historic buildings and older structures.
Type N Mortar
- A general purpose mortar which can be used on Roofs, Chimneys and Walls.
- Balanced mortar strength which allows for flexibility.
- Best mortar choice for residential chimneys, masonry and brickwork exposed to moderate weather conditions.
Type S Mortar
- A more durable Mortar when compared to type N. This mortar provides a higher bond strength and resistance to more severe weather.
- Ideal Mortar choice for areas exposed to harsh weather conditions and climates.
- Most often used for laying bricks and stones.
Type M Mortar
- The strongest Mortar mix available, which is most suited for heavy duty applications such as stone foundations.
- This Mortar mix works great for industrial chimneys and high-load structures.
- With the added strength comes less flexibility, which means this mortar is prone to cracking if used incorrectly.

How do I choose the right Mortar for my roof and chimney?
There are various factors you should consider when choosing the right binding material for your home. We recommend considering your properties climate & typical weather conditions, what brick, stone or masonry you currently have, and the structures load-bearing requirements. In addition to this, it is also very important to consider the application method of your chosen Mortar, and consider the following crucial steps:
- Clean surface for application – ensuring your Mortar is applied to a clean surface on your roof or chimney is essential for the longevity of the mortar application.
- Creating the correct consistency – your Mortar should be mixed to the recommended viscosity in order for best adhesion.
- Sufficient Drying – your Mortar should have time to properly cure in order to protect it’s integrity and longevity.
